Course content
Prepare Your Environment
- Check the compatibility of your VMware vSphere environment with Azure.
- Download and install the Azure Migrate appliance in your vSphere environment.
- Create a project in Azure Migrate for your migration.
Discover and Assess Your VMware VMs
- In the Azure portal, navigate to Azure Migrate.
- Select “Discover” and choose VMware vSphere as the source.
- Provide the IP address or hostname of your vCenter Server, along with credentials.
- Azure Migrate will discover your VMs and assess their readiness for migration, providing insights into sizing and compatibility.
Prepare for Migration
- Review the assessment results and address any issues identified.
- Ensure that the Azure Migrate replication appliance is deployed in your vSphere environment.
- Configure replication settings, including target region and storage account in Azure.
Start Replication
- In the Azure portal, select “Replicate” in Azure Migrate.
- Choose the discovered VMs you want to replicate.
- Configure replication settings, such as target region and virtual network in Azure.
- Start replication for the selected VMs.
Test Migration
- Select the replicated VM in Azure Migrate.
- Choose “Test migration” and specify the target settings.
- Azure will create a test VM in Azure based on the replicated data from VMware.
- Validate the test VM to ensure it functions as expected.
Perform Migration
- Select the replicated VM in Azure Migrate.
- Choose “Migrate” and specify the target settings.
- Azure will initiate the migration process, replicating any delta changes since the last replication.
- Monitor the migration progress in Azure Migrate.
Post-Migration Tasks
- Update DNS records and any relevant configurations to point to the new Azure VMs.
- Test the migrated VMs thoroughly to ensure functionality.
- Decommission the original VMs in your VMware vSphere environment, if necessary.
- Optimize and manage your Azure resources for cost-efficiency.
